When designing spaces for toddlers, I try to incorporate a little bit of what they love along with my modern design aesthetic. Sometimes this can be rather difficult because let’s face it, most toddlers boy stuff is tacky.
The first things I purchased for Avery’s bathroom were blue whale cushioned elbow and knee resting mats for bath time. I knew that bending over during bath time would put a strain on my body so that was an important purchase for me.

Then once during bath time, Avery’s little head got really close to hitting the water spout. After that, I began looking for a bath spot cover. Little did I know, the items that I had already purchased also had a complimenting blue whale bath spout cover so I got that also.

Shortly after all of this Baby Shark came out and went viral! I knew Avery would need a step stool and one day while at Home Goods, I found the perfect little blue shark step stool. Sharks and whales are both fish so I didn’t stress it not being the same exact fish. Also, the shark was in the same color family as the whale items and the odds of anyone noticing was slim anyway due to the placement of the items in the bathroom.

After this, I began shopping for a shower curtain and rugs. I think I actually saw the rugs first and matched the curtains to the rug.

I definitely wanted the shark rug when I saw it so I tossed it on the floor in the aisle to begin creating a story or life size mood board. Then I threw down some other rugs down nearby so that I could assess which ones paired best together. The ones that I liked were not identical at all and I don’t even think they were part of the same family but they seemed to compliment each other.

Then I found a shower curtain that tied everything together. It made the rugs make better sense and I knew it would compliment the shark stool.

The bathroom was pretty cool after this but I it just didn’t feel done to me. I wanted a pop of color on the wall so I began looking for peel and stick wallpaper.
I also have peel and stick wallpaper in Avery’s room so I knew it would be the perfect solution.
What I love about the way they do wallpaper now is that it’s basically one large gigantic sticker. You unroll it and stick it up on the wall and you can just as easily peel the edge and rip it all back off in one fail swoop.
The wallpaper that I got for Avery’s bathroom was first spotted on Urban Outfitters website. I fell in love with it as soon as I laid eyes on it. However, to eliminate any potential doubts, I shopped around before making the purchase.
I’m the type of designer who likes to bring items home and place them in my space, tags attached, to see if the vibe works. I return what doesn’t and keep building until I’m happy with the design.
Back to the wallpaper…when shopping around, I found the same exact wallpaper at Target for a lesser price so I ended up making the purchase through Targets website (link at bottom). And the crazy part is that the item arrived in UO packaging so maybe Target is fulfilling orders for UO now. Not sure but I was happy with the price adjustment.

What you may notice is that Avery still has his training potty in the bathroom. We just recently purchased the Potty Training Seat with the adjustable ladder so I want to make sure he has fully adopted, and comfortable with, the new option before removing the old.
Let’s talk about the training potty first. I chose the Summer Infant My Size potty because it is literally a mini version of the potty that we as adults use and complimented the space well.

The toilet tank provides a convenient space for wipes and this potty also features a handle that makes flush sounds when pulled. As cute as it is, I don’t recommend it if you have boys. Here’s why: The anatomy of boys is not the same as girls and the splash guard that it comes with is not affixed to the potty. This means it falls off nearly every time Avery sits down on the potty. And the splash guard is very important when potty training boys so you can imagine the frustration. If you have a daughter, however, she would love this potty!
Avery has another potty that I actually prefer for potty training boys because it doesn’t have the distraction of the flushing handle and the splash guard is built into the potty. This is awesome because you don’t have to worry about pee pee being all over your floor from the potty. What a huge relief!

Now that Avery is comfortable with going potty, and I’m sick of cleaning poop out of the portable potty every single day, I wanted to let him potty on the big potty. Some of the challenges I faced were how would very get up on that big potty and if he somehow did, how would I prevent him from falling in? That’s when I found the Potty Training Seat with Adjustable Ladder.

Let me tell you, from the first time Avery saw this thing, he has wanted to sit on the potty. I have never forced him to potty, disciplined him about pottying or anything and I don’t think I ever will have to with this item.
I don’t know if it’s the ladder that he gets to climb, the fact that he’s on the big boy potty or what but he loves going to potty all the time now. He even tries to sit on it when he doesn’t have to potty. That’s how much he likes his new Potty Training Seat with Ladder.

The Potty Training Seat with Ladder comes in many colors. I chose a color that would compliment my bathroom but they definitely have other options so check them out.
I would say that Avery’s bathroom is done at this point. There are some things I’m debating changing, like painting the cabinets, changing out the mirror and lighting, but that’s not happening anytime soon so I think it’s safe to finally unveil Avery’s bathroom to the world.
